Decision guide
Boiler repair versus replacement: what is the right choice?
There is no one-size-fits-all answer. The sensible choice depends on the boiler’s age, the fault, parts availability, repair cost and its recent reliability.
When a repair makes sense
Modern boilers are designed to be repairable. A failed fan, pump, sensor or valve does not automatically mean the whole appliance should be replaced.
- The boiler is under 8–10 years old
- This is the first or second fault
- Parts remain readily available
- The repair cost is proportionate
- The boiler has otherwise been reliable
When replacement may be the better choice
Repeated faults and scarce parts can turn an apparently cheaper repair into ongoing expense and inconvenience.
- The boiler is over 10–12 years old
- Parts are difficult to source
- Breakdowns have become frequent
- The heat exchanger has failed
- Repair cost is high compared with replacement
- The boiler is inefficient and costly to run
Honest advice matters
If a boiler is worth repairing, that is what we will recommend. If replacement makes more sense, we will explain why and show the available options without pressure.
